Robbers Kill RRS Cop In Bank Raid



A Rapid Response Squad, RRS, officer attached to Pen Cinema Police Station under Area ‘G’ Ogba Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, Constable Nafiu was killed early this morning during a gun battle between the police and armed robbers who stormed a new generation bank along College Road, Ogba.
When our correspondents visited the bank this morning, security personnel in the bank were seen directing the bank customers to another branch at Caterpillar bus stop along Ijaiye Road, Ogba for business transaction.

N20 Bribe: Corporal Dismissed For Killing Pregnant Woman



A police corporal, Abudu Alonge, who allegedly shot and killed a pregnant woman over a N20 bribe has been dismissed.
The trigger-happy cop allegedly opened fire on a Nissan Almera car with registration number Ondo KAA 80 AA and the bullet hit the pregnant woman who was in the car and she died before she could be taken to the hospital.
The incident happened along Ijapo Road in Akure, the Ondo state capital, southwest Nigeria, on Tuesday when the driver of the cab reportedly refused to give the policeman the N20 bribe he demanded.
The spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident.
He condemned the act and added that it was being investigated.

Lagos Transfuses 90,788 Units Of Blood Into Patients



All public hospitals in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have transfused 90,788 units of blood into patients in the last five years, says the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee.
This was revealed on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the Strategic Planning Workshop organised by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee, LSBTC, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCC1, Ikeja.

The statistics shows that between 2008 and 2012, 90,788 units of blood were used up by all public hospitals in Lagos for patients that needed blood transfusion.
The statistics also revealed that out of the 423,893 pints of blood received and screened by the LSBTC between 2005 and January and February 2013,  4,840 of them were found to be HIV infected, 8,830 have hepatitis B, 3,418 units contain syphilis, while 393,165 units of blood were certified okay for use by public and private hospitals.

Cell Phones Reduce Patronage For Wristwatches

Some wristwatch dealers in Lagos on Tuesday said the introduction of cell phones had caused a drop in the sale of wristwatches.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that their sales had dropped since the introduction of cell phones.
NAN reports that Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) was introduced in 2001 by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Mr. John Emeka, Chairman, Avido Supermarket in Ketu, Lagos, told NAN that sale of wristwatches had dropped since phone handsets were also offering the facility.

‘I was forced into robbery’



A 27-year-old robbery suspect, Ifeanyi Douglas, has blamed his involvement in crime on intimidation.
 Douglas was paraded on Tuesday alongside two others for robbing some banks in the South-West and Kwara State at the Lagos State Police Command.
The suspects were said to be part of a larger gang.
Douglas, Jamiu Isasi and Yinusa Lati were arrested last week by the Special Anti Robbery Squad Ikeja, Lagos after their locations were revealed by one of their accomplices.
Douglas, a former sales boy at Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, claimed that he received N380,000 after the gang robbed a bank in Osun State.

Police Parade Seven Airport Robbers


The Lagos State Police Command today paraded seven suspected armed robbers said to have carried out the robbery attack on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, last month.
A gang of armed robbers attacked the airport on 13 March, 2013, shot two policemen dead and made away with millions of dollars stolen from the Bureau De Change in the airport.

Man, 62, Beaten To Death During Forceful Eviction



A 62-year old man, Sunday Uche Michael, has allegedly been beaten to death at Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
At least 10 persons were said to have stormed the victim’s residence at 40, Church Street, Aboru at about 7p.m. on Monday, and attempted ejecting him from the house.
P.M.NEWS reliably gathered that the deceased and his 29-year old physically challenged son, Ifeanyi Michael, were severely beaten by their assailants and the old man died in the process.

The grandpa was declared dead on arrival at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, where he was rushed to.
Trouble started when the deceased was allegedly asked by his landlord, Mr Akinrinola, to vacate his self-contained apartment after spending barely a year out of the one and half years he paid for when he packed into the house last year January.

‘Keep Waterways Clean’- Governor Fashola

Governor Fashola has called on Lagosians to keep the waterways in the state free of refuse and encroachments.
Speaking at the annual Lagos Water Regatta on Easter Sunday, he said keeping the waterways free of refuse and from constant reclamation would ensure that it continues to play the role of drainage, means of transportation and source of food for residents for generations to come.

5 Petrol Thieves Arrested in Lagos



Five petrol thieves, who siphon fuel from the pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, have been arrested in Lagos.
They were arrested by the operatives of Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police’s Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit. Mr Friday Ibadin, Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Task Force, said in Lagos today that the suspects were arrested on Sunday at 7th Avenue, FESTAC Town Lagos, with 270 bags containing 120 liters of petrol each.
“We got an intelligence report at about 12.30 am that vandals were at Ijedodo, Ijegun in Iba Local Government Council Development area of Lagos, and were sailing across the river along FESTAC with petroleum products stolen from NNPC pipeline in Oke Agemo, Ijedodo.

Fanfare As Lagos Holds Colourful Carnival







It was fanfare on Monday as the Lagos State Government staged a colourful carnival to celebrate Easter.
